Problems from CGCS

چکیده

Most of these problems were presented at the conference on Combinatorics, Geometry and Computer Science, held at CIRM, Luminy, 2-4 May 2007. I have added one problem on a similar theme after the meeting. The problems have been arranged so that those with similar themes occur together as far as possible. 1. Nearly round polytopes Communicated by Komei Fukuda. We call a polytope centered if it contains the origin in its relative interior. Nesterov [17] has recently proved that the Minkowski sum of a centered full-dimensional polytope (and more generally a centered full-dimensional compact convex body) with a properly scaled copy of its dual gives a set whose asphericity is at most the square root of that of the initial polytope. The asphericity of a set is here defined as the ratio of the diameter of its smallest enclosing ball to that of its largest enclosed ball. Thus, summing a polytope with its own dual has a strong rounding effect. For this reason, the Minkowski sum P + αP , will be called a Nesterov rounding of a polytope

The Therapeutic effect of Memantine through the Stimulation of Synapse Formation and Dendritic Spine Maturation in Autism and Fragile X Syndrome

Although the pathogenic mechanisms that underlie autism are not well understood, there is evidence showing that metabotropic and ionotropic glutamate receptors are hyper-stimulated and the GABAergic system is hypo-stimulated in autism. Memantine is an uncompetitive antagonist of NMDA receptors and is widely prescribed for treatment of Alzheimer's disease treatment. Recently, it has been shown t...

Endogenous proBDNF is a negative regulator of migration of cerebellar granule cells in neonatal mice.

The majority of newborn neurons migrate from their birthplace to final destination in the developing brain. Migration of cerebellar granule cells (CGCs) requires multiple factors. Mature brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) positively regulates the proliferation, migration, survival and differentiation of CGCs in rodents. However, the role of the BDNF precursor, proBDNF, in neuronal develop...

Diabetes Research: A Perspective From the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases

Over the last 5 decades, health-care advances have yielded quantum improvements in the life expectancy of individuals with congenital genitourinary conditions (CGCs), leading to a crisis of care. Many individuals with CGC enter adulthood unprepared to manage their condition. Pediatric CGC specialists lack training to manage adulthood-related health-care issues, whereas adult genitourinary speci...

Synaptic relationships of the cerebral giant cells with motoneurones in the feeding system of Lymnaea stagnalis.

1. The cerebral giant cells (CGCs) of Lymnaea have a tonic, modulatory effect on the intensity of output from feeding motoneurones in the buccal ganglia. 2. Short latency, excitatory and probably monosynaptic connexions occur between the CGCs and three identified feeding motoneurones. Unitary excitatory postsynaptic potentials in these motoneurones, following CGC spikes, are of different sizes ...

Exploring the significance of morphological diversity for cerebellar granule cell excitability

The relatively simple and compact morphology of cerebellar granule cells (CGCs) has led to the view that heterogeneity in CGC shape has negligible impact upon the integration of mossy fibre (MF) information. Following electrophysiological recording, 3D models were constructed from high-resolution imaging data to identify morphological features that could influence the coding of MF input pattern...

Effects of mycophenolate mofetil on proliferation and mucin-5AC expression in human conjunctival goblet cells in vitro

PURPOSE To investigate the effects of mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) on proliferation and mucin-5AC (MUC5AC) mRNA expression of normal human conjunctival goblet cells (CGCs) in vitro and to understand mechanisms of MMF in treatment of dry eye syndrome at molecular level. METHODS Purified human CGCs were treated with a series of graded concentrations of MMF after being confirmed by immunocytochem...
